Abstract

Analysis of the recently sequenced genome of the plant Arabidopsis thaliana revealed the unexpected presence of 20 putative glutamate receptor genes. This surprising observation is certain to trigger a race for the identification of those signal transduction pathways in the plant that utilize these receptors. In this note published in the Compass section of Science the major laboratories working on plant glutamate receptors got together, compared their data and agreed on a unified nomenclature for the emerging field of plant glutamate receptor physiology.
