In the face of the demographic change, the preservation of older adults’ physical functioning, mobility and independence should be a major public health concern.
There is no doubt that regular physical activity and exercise make a substantial contribution to maintaining and improving health in old age. Both the positive influence on the progression of many chronic conditions, such as diabetes und coronary heart disease, and on the preservation of physical functioning, mobility and independence are well documented, even in highly aged and frail elderly people.
Unfortunately, the physical activity level of many older people does not correspond with current guidelines. This is particularly the case in chronically ill and mobility restricted elderly people.
Novel innovative concepts to increase physical activity in this population group are needed! One option is the HOMEfit-concept.
