Martin Winterhalder

Martin Winterhalder studied history, sociology and social psychology at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Universität Duisburg-Essen. In his master's thesis he analyzed the use of metaphors in the writings of the geneticist Richard Goldschmidt. A member of the Mercator Research Group since October 2012, he is currently working on his PhD thesis on “Brain Research and the Possibility of an Autonomous Subject in the Early 20th Century” (working title). His research is guided by an interest in the social effects that biological knowledge can have, when scientists (or journalists, or other historical actors) interpret it with recourse to philosophical concepts such as determinism or free will, as well as in the social aspects of knowledge production in life sciences and philosophy.
