Frequently Asked Questions About Studying Abroad


Students of Arabic and Islamic Studies have many opportunities to study abroad. The partner universities of the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies (IFAI) include the University of Haifa (Israel), the University of Nizwa (Oman), Istanbul Bilgi University (Turkey) and Bogazici University (Turkey). There are also opportunities to study abroad through the EU's Erasmus program and RUB's university partnership agreements.

Within Europe, students of Arabic and Islamic Studies can participate in the EU's Erasmus program. Students of Arabic and Islamic Studies can generally participate in the Erasmus program after successfully completing the language course modules SK-1 and SK-2 from the 5th semester onwards. Each student is entitled to 12 months of ERASMUS funding during their Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral studies. These can be divided between Erasmus study visits and/or Erasmus internships as desired. The minimum duration of study visits (3 months/90 days) and internships (2 months/60 days) must be observed.

The International Office offers over 50 exchange programs with universities in North, Central and South America, Asia and Oceania.

If you study abroad with a RUB exchange program, you do not pay any additional tuition fees. If you would like to organize a study stay at a university of your choice, you can do so as a so-called freemover.

Frequently asked questions for an internship abroad


Funding is available for all self-organized, voluntary or compulsory internships. Internships in European program countries are funded via Erasmus, internships outside these countries are funded via PROMOS. Students of Arabic and Islamic Studies can complete internships abroad as part of their study program. In the Bachelor's degree program, this is possible as part of the optional courses (Optionalbereich). Students of the 1-subject Master's program can complete an internship abroad as part of the supplementary courses (Ergänzungsbereich). The following modality applies to subject-specific internships: 4-week internship abroad (full-time, 160 hours) - 10 CP

Frequently asked questions for a research stay abroad


Students of Arabic and Islamic Studies can apply for funding for their research stays, research internships and for their thesis research abroad.

Research stays are funded via Erasmus internships, LabExchange and PROMOS. Further information on student research abroad is available on the websites or from the contact persons of the respective programs.
