The 12th IEC was held at Åre (Sweden) between 20th and 29th of August 2017. The theme of the conference was “High- and ultrahigh-pressure rocks – keys to lithosphere dynamics through geologic time.

The organizing team led by Charlotte “Lotta” Möller and Jaroslaw ”Jarek” Majka included Iwona Klonowska (Uppsala University, Sweden), Herman van Roermund (University Utrecht, The Netherlands), Marian Janák (Slovak Academy of Sciences, Slovak Republic), Dirk Spengler (Technical University Berlin, Germany), and Hans Vrijmoed (Free University Berlin, Germany). 133 participants from 24 countries on 5 continents attend the conference; 58 talks (10 of which were keynote lectures) and 65 posters were presented (Abstract volume).

Following the tradition during the last conferences, Pre- and Post-Conference field trips were organized and the four conference days included one day of Mid-Conference field trip for all participants.

The Pre-Conference field trip (August 20th – 23rd) led to the high- (HP) and ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic terranes in Northern Jämtland, Central Swedish Caledonides. Field trip leaders were Herman van Roermund, Jarosław Majka, Marian Janák and Iwona Klonowska (Pre-Conference field guide).

The Mid-Conference field trip was led by Iwona Klonowska, Jarosław Majka, Marian Janák and David Gee. Main focus was on UHP gneisses of the Middle Allochton and ultra-mafic rocks of the Upper Allochton in Central Jämtland (Mid-Conference field guide: see Abstract volume).

The Post-Conference field trip (August 26th – 29th) was organized by Herman van Roermund, Dirk Spengler and Hans Vrijmoed and led to the HP and UHP rocks of the Western Gneiss region (WGR), Norway (Post-Conference field guide).

Best student talk Best student poster Papers related to the 12th IEC were published in the Special Issue "High- and ultrahigh-pressure rocks—keys to lithosphere dynamics" in the Journal of Metamorphic Geology (2018, Volume 36, Issue 5); guest editors were Charlotte Möller, Jaroslaw Majka, Marian Janák and Herman van Roermund.
