International Eclogite
Conference

IEC-14 – Lyon, France – 2022

The 14th International Eclogite Conference (IEC-14) had been organized between July 10 and 13 2022, in France, where the name eclogite was coined by Haüy two centuries ago in 1822 and the First International Eclogite Conference was organized in 1982 by David C. Smith. After a year of lockdown due to the Covid pandemic, this conference had been an opportunity to meet again and exchange ideas on high-pressure metamorphism. The conference was held at the "École Normale Supérieure” in Lyon and, because of the Covid Pandemic, included the possibility of a virtual participation. The organizing team included the Chairs Samuel Angiboust (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon) and Gaston Godard (Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, Université de Paris-Cité).

Scientific Program

The Pre-Conference excursion (July 7-9) guided by Gaston Godard and Philippe Yamato led to the Armorican Massif, France (Île de Groix glaucophanites, Vendée eclogites and eclogite-facies gneiss, Champtoceaux eclogites).

The “Syn-Conference excursion” took place in Paris, in the footsteps of René-Just Haüy, at the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, with talks on two centuries of research on eclogites, visits to eclogite collections (Haüy’s “type” eclogite collection, Smith’s eclogite collection COSEM), to the laboratories of Curie, Haüy and Becquerel, and was organised by Christian Chopin, Cristiano Ferraris, Gaston Godard, Violaine Sautter and David Smith.

The Aosta Valley (Italy) was the target of the Post-Conference excursion, led by Samuel Angiboust, Daniele Castelli, Silvana Martin, Gisella Rebay, Simone Tumiati and Michele Zucali. The following localities were visited: Saint-Marcel valley: glaucophanites and sulphide deposit (Servette), HP manganese deposit (Praborna); eclogite-facies paragneiss (Quincinetto) and Breuil Cervinia Plan maison: a balcony on the Matterhorn (Cervino).
