The film reveals the brutal apartheid regime in South Africa. It is the story of Steve Biko, a black freedom fighter, and Donald Wood, a white journalist. The Englishes spoken by the characters reflect White and Black South African English, but the main actors, Denzel Washington and Kevin Kline, are of course not mother tongue speakers of these varieties.
