Dear students and members of Ruhr University Bochum,
We are entering the new semester, and we would like to welcome you all. As always at the start of the semester, the campus is buzzing with activity. And you’re all invited to join in: Dive in and explore the full range and diversity that Ruhr University Bochum has to offer. Don’t limit yourself to your degree course or department, but venture into new spheres! There’s no better place to do this than here, where all disciplines exist side by side. Feel free to share ideas with people with a wide range of expertise. In these challenging times that are fraught with heated debates, this can be a great opportunity and an enriching experience.
Looking ahead to the coming semester, there are many more opportunities for you to join us: For example, you can take part in the campus-wide Sustainability Day on November 14 at the Nordforum in front of the University Library. Here, you’ll find out about initiatives demonstrating exemplary commitment, and you can also do your bit to promote greater sustainability and climate protection.
Visit our Annual Academic Celebration on November 20 in the Audimax – it is the highlight of our academic year. This is where we’ll honor our best students for their outstanding achievements and present the Qubo Innovation Award for sustainable transfer projects, which we award every two years.
And one more opportunity to all those of you who want to have fun and forge international contacts: Apply to be a volunteer for the FISU World University Games (https://rhineruhr2025.com/en/volunteer) 2025 by October 31. This globally acclaimed sporting event will deliver inspiring experiences in Bochum and the wider region next year. And you can be a part of it!
On this note, we wish you a successful and fulfilling semester!

Excellence Strategy

Ruhr University Bochum has submitted renewal proposals for its two Clusters of Excellence “Ruhr Explores Solvation – RESOLV” and “Securing the Digital Society – CASA”. RESOLV – now a joint cluster with TU Dortmund University – has been funded as part of the Excellence Strategy since 2012 and CASA since 2019. While the RESOLV team researches how solvents influence chemical reactions, CASA explores innovative and holistic IT security solutions that contribute to the protection and resilience of our digital society. The decision if funding will continue will be made on May 22, 2025.

Chancellor’s visit

Ruhr University Bochum was very much in demand on the political stage in summer 2024. Following Minister President Hendrik Wüst’s visit to our CASA Cluster of Excellence in June, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited our ZESS research building and the Makerspace at Mark 51°7 at the end of August. He was given an overview of how regional transformation can succeed. Incidentally: on his visit to the Marl Chemical Park, he was welcomed by a professor from Ruhr University Bochum, too; namely Professor Lukas Gooßen, who holds the Evonik Chair of Organic Chemistry and is a member of the RESOLV Cluster of Excellence.

Generative AI

Generative artificial intelligence is a hot topic around the world. As of the winter semester 2024/25, Ruhr University Bochum is launching GPT@RUB, a data protection-friendly option available to all students, teaching staff and employees of the university that will enable them to use ChatGPT and, in future, other language models free of charge. After all, students who want to learn how to use AI tools at university require reliable access.

Campaign against anti-Semitism and racism

The Campaign against Anti-Semitism and Racism from October 28 to November 14 will focus on the manifestations, effects and conflicts associated with anti-Semitism and racism. Approaching the issue from an educational perspective with a focus on human rights, Ruhr University Bochum, TU Dortmund University and the University of Duisburg-Essen are jointly providing space for a critical and differentiated exchange in an academic setting. In light of the increasing number of incidents at universities, it’s crucial to identify and critically question misanthropic and dehumanizing narratives without pitting one form of discrimination against another. The Anti-Discrimination Network of the University Alliance Ruhr would like to encourage all university members and interested members of the public to use the three weeks of the campaign to educate themselves, reflect and engage in joint discussions in the form of lectures, workshops and dialog.

Symposium with Tsukuba

To kick off the new liaison office of the University of Tsukuba on the Ruhr University Bochum campus, a high-profile hybrid symposium on “Cutting Edge Research for Smart Societies” was held at the university on September 5, 2024 with a live stream to Tsukuba.
Six professors from the Japanese partner university traveled to Bochum to attend the symposium, including the Vice President for Research Affairs. The keynotes focused on topics such as sustainability, digitalization and artificial intelligence. The partner cities Bochum and Tsukuba were both selected by their respective governments as model cities for smart cities.
