He has been Ricercatore Universitario (Assistant Professor) at the University of Padova (1983-1992) and Professore Associato (Associate Professor) at the University of Salerno (1992-1993). In November 1993 he has moved to the University of Verona, where is currently Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry in the Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Science. He has worked in numerous foreign Universities and Institutions; in particular, in the years 1987-1988 he has been a National Research Council and NATO Post-Doc Fellow in the Department of Chemistry, Birkbeck College, University of London, in the laboratory of Prof. C. D. Flint. In May 2008 he has received a doctorate honoris causa from Blaise Pascal University, Clermont-Ferrand, France. In November 2011 he has received the Marco Polo award for the scientific and technological collaboration between Italy and Japan in the field of Nanotechnology.
He has published more than 350 papers in the field of Chemistry and Optical Spectroscopy of Inorganic Materials. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC CChem) and a reviewer for numerous international journals. He has been Visiting Professor in various Universities abroad (among them Université de Caen, Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand, France and Kyoto University, Japan) and has acted as invited speaker at many International Conferences.
Marco Bettinelli is a member of the Editorial Board and Associate Editor of the Journal of Luminescence (Elsevier). He has been Guest Editor of a Special Issue of the journal Optical Materials (Volume 33, Issue 7 pp. 979-1142 (May 2011), Rare earth doped materials for optical based technologies Symposium K of the 2010 EMRS Spring Meeting).
