Central atrophy in the disease course of MS

NiRIMS (NEUROIMAGING RESEARCH IN MS)

Our focus of research is quantitative image analysis of neuroinflamatory and neurodegenerative processes in Multiple Sclerosis. We study i.a. disease related changes of the volumes of brain and spinal cord by volumetry and voxel-based morphometry, and tissue specific changes by diffusion-tensor-imaging (DTI) and MR spectroscopy based on magnetic resonnce image data of 3 Tesla and 1.5 Tesla scanners. NiRiMS is an integral element of the MS related focus of research at the Ruhr-University of Bochum.
Cooperating with the neurological clinic of the St. Josef Hospital (director: Prof. Dr. Ralf Gold), we have implemented a standardized MRI protocol for MS patients according to the recommendations of the international advisory boards, which ist sucessfully in use in our house since many years.
We maintain close cooperations with other national and international research institutions.
