Overview of the focal point Programme "Membrane and Nervous System Biochemistry" (Previously "biochemistry of the nervous system")
Recently, Professor Günther-Pomorski has accepted the Chair of Biochemistry II at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry. His group adds a novel competence in revealing the organization, functioning, and dynamics of membrane pumps and their complexes in lipid and membrane. Hence, the name of the Focal Point Programme “Biochemistry of the Nervous System” has now been modified to “Membrane and Nervous System Biochemistry”. The Focal Point Programme comprises 17 groups located in 4 different faculties, i.e. Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biology and Biotechnology, Medicine, and Biopsychology. The unifying concept of the Focal Point Programme is to gain insight into brain function in health and disease by using a broad variety of approaches. Mass spectrometric proteome investigations are combined with physiological studies, brain anatomical and structural questions are complemented by up to date imaging methods. Molecular protein investigations include optical control of synaptic signalling proteins and are related to extracellular receptor activation and intracellular signalling processes with implications in animal behaviour and cognition. As electrical activity across membranes is important for understanding of brain function and plasticity, there is a strong electrophysiological community within the Focal Point Programme as well. For more specific information you may want to visit the web pages of the individual groups of interest.
