5-fluorouracil is an antineoplastic API, administered
orally and as an injection to treat skin, colorectal,
breast, gastrointestinal, and ovarian
cancers. 5-fluorouracil is an interesting molecular
building block not only from a pharmaceutical point of
view but also from the point of view of Crystal
Engineering. The simultaneous presence of hydrogen
donors and acceptors allows the formation of a wide
variety of multicomponent systems. With focus on
pharmaceutical applications, co-crystalline
5-fluorouracil compounds with the nontoxic co-formers
succinic acid and adipic acid could be synthesized and
characterized.
